Research by Leiden University
In June/July 2010, the first part of the scientific research into the community of Dutch Descendants in Malaysia conducted by Leiden University in the Netherlands took place.
This research is supported by the MDDP and the Netherlands-Malaysia Association (Vereniging Nederland-Maleisie). We ask the support and participation of all members to make this a success.
This research will continue in 2011!
Updates will be added to this page when available.
- Update 14/07/2010 -
Dutch researcher Valerie Blasius has completed her one month stay in Malaysia and she has returned to Holland. During her time here, she has conducted a number of interviews with Dutch Descendants and Eurasians who were kind enough to meet her and even accomodate her. Unfortunately, she was not able to meet and interview all those who she would like to. This will have to wait till next year when the research continues.

- Update 05/05/2010 -
Dear fellow Malaysian Dutch descendants,
The Malaysian Dutch Descendants Project (MDDP) is happy to inform you that after many months of discussions and arrangements with our contact in Holland, we have finally been able to confirm the initiation of an exciting new research project to be jointly undertaken by us.
For the very first time, there will be a professionally conducted academic research on the community of Dutch descendants in Malaysia. The purpose of this is to research the anthropological background of the community.
The research project will be headed by Drs. Pim ten Hoorn from The Hague, who is already a friend of many of the participants of the MDDP, and will be overseen by Professor Peter Nas of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands. This means that this is a Leiden University research project.
There will also be a research assistant by the name of Valerie Blasius who is a student from the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Leiden. She will arrive to Malaysia to assist in this research project.
It is planned for this research project to consist of two parts.
The first part will kick off when Miss Valerie Blasius arrives to Malaysia on 14th June 2010. This will be the first time that this 21 years old student will visit this part of the world. Valerie will be staying in Malaysia for about one month, where she will visit Dutch descendants living in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca and Penang.
The second part of this research will begin when both Drs. Pim ten Hoorn and Valerie Blasius return to Malaysia sometime either the end of this year or early next year.
When Valerie Blasius arrives next month, her mission will be to meet as many Malaysian Dutch Descendants as possible, with the assistance of the MDDP. This is why she will need to travel from KL to Malacca and Penang. She will conduct a preliminary research by interviewing the Dutch descendants who she will meet. Valerie is also hoping to be invited to stay with different families so that she may experience firsthand the life of a Malaysian Dutch descendant family.
We hereby wish to appeal for your kind co-operation to help see to the success of this research project. We sincerely hope that you will be able to find the time to make yourself available so that you may be interviewed by Valerie. The actual dates when she will be here will be made available in due course.
